Prototype Gong 3 I 31 inch Wind Gong I HandCrafted In China
This is a one-of-a-kind instrument. Working directly with our maker in China, we developed what would become our 31-inch Ohm Wind Gong, and this is the prototype for that gong.
The surface is what the forging process left behind: radial hammer lines spreading outward from the center boss.
The plate is formed from B20 bronze alloy, approximately 78% copper and 22% tin, through the same process of repeated heating, hammering, and cooling that defines traditional Chinese gong making.
Unlike a Chau, the wind gong has no turned rim flange and no lathed playing surface.
The entire face is open, which is what gives this form its immediate, unconstrained voice.
Sound
Struck, this instrument opens with a modal spread across the low register — a dense cluster of energy between 97 and 132 Hz (G2 through C3) that does not resolve into a single clean fundamental but instead produces the broad, enveloping low-end wash that defines the wind gong form at this size. Above that, strong mid partials at G4 and C5 carry the harmonic body of the sound, with shimmer extending through D5 and F#5. The dynamic range spans from a whisper at the lightest touch to a full, saturating crash at maximum force, with the overtone spread opening further as strike intensity increases.
Played with a friction mallet, the instrument shifts into a sustained singing tone centered on G4 at 397 Hz, with its octave at G5 reinforced underneath. The broad crash character of the struck voice gives way to something focused and continuous — a different instrument accessed through a different technique, available in the same disc.
Sustain measured at 31 seconds from a single strike.
