Prototype Gong 8 I 23.5inch Bronze Wind Gong I Handmade in China

A 23.5 inch Bronze Wind Gong, handmade in China.

The plate is formed from bronze alloy, approximately 78% copper and 22% tin, and the surface showcases a warm gold playing field marked by the radial hammer lines that spread outward from the boss. The beautiful reality of a handmade instrument.

The open edge with no turned flange is what allows the full plate to radiate freely, producing the immediate, unconstrained voice that distinguishes wind gongs from Chau.

Sound

This instrument opens on a fundamental at approximately 90 Hz, sitting at the boundary between F2 and F#2, that dominates the full sound. For a 23.5-inch wind gong, that low-fundamental dominance is not guaranteed by size alone. It is a function of how this particular plate was formed and weighted, and it gives this instrument more low-end authority than most gongs of this diameter produce.

The mid-range fills in through B2 at 122 Hz and a dense cluster of partials spanning E4 through A4, the kind of overlapping, intermodulating wash that defines the wind gong voice at full strike force. Sustain runs the full 26 seconds of the recording from a single strike sequence, with the 90 Hz fundamental carrying the tail cleanly after the mid-range has resolved.

The dynamic range is wide. At the lightest touch, this instrument produces a focused, almost bell-like tone from the fundamental.

One of a Kind

This is a one of one gong, made as a prototype in pursuit of the Ohm Store's full line of Gongs.
