Prototype Gong 7 I 19.5 Inch Chau Tam Tam: Handmade in China
19.5 inch bronze, Chau Tam Tam handmade in China.
The contrast between the bright gold of the lathed field and the dark of the rim is the defining visual of the Chau form.
The plate is formed from bronze alloy, approximately 78% copper and 22% tin, through repeated cycles of heating, hammering, and cooling.
Sound
This instrument has a clear, dominant fundamental at 115 Hz. At 19.5 inches, a Chau of this quality produces a fundamental that's clean and more separated from its overtones than a larger gong of the same type. The harmonic series above it — F3, B3, D4, A4 — fills in the mid-range body of the sound without competing with the fundamental for presence. Sub-bass energy at 61 Hz and 91 Hz is present in the sustained body of the decay.
The sustain runs the full 22 seconds of the recording, with the Bb2 fundamental carrying the tail long after the upper partials have resolved.
One of a Kind
This is one of one, a protoype made in the pursuit of the full development of Ohm Store's Gong Line.
